The Westernationals has traditionally meant the most fierce Top Doorslammer competition of the season at Perth Motorplex and the 48th annual version will be no different!
With an ANDRA gold Christmas tree on the line for the winner, the field is primed with a who’s who of Top Doorslammer in Western Australia.
Leading the way is hot favourite John Zappia and the Fuchs/Dananni Hotshots Monaro. Zappia has been clicking off 5.6 and 5.7 second times with regularity at Perth Motorplex this season, but the many times Australian champion is far from unbeatable with the field rapidly closing the distance to his times.
Summer Slam points leader Daniel Gregorini and Marty Dack have both run into the 5.7 second zone and could prove the spoilers. Gregorini – the 2014 Westernationals winner – seems to have some consistency returning to his game, following personal best runs at Nitro Night in February, while Dack’s ability to pluck quick runs out of the blue will keep his competition on edge.
The Moresby brothers have been a new force in the Summer Slam series so far this season, with Stu Moresby’s new Studebaker clicking off its first five second run recently. The Westernationals has been good to Ryan Moresby in the past – last year he qualified into what was then the quickest field in Australian history.
Then you have the wildcards. Mark Chapman comes into the race as a dark horse, with some five second runs to his credit. The key will be putting together a string of consistent full runs with the Penrite-supported Plymouth Fury.
Pino Priolo seems to have been on the verge of great things for some time in his Home Group WA Chev, but he will need all his ducks to line up in a row to have a chance at making it to the winner’s circle.
Steve Aldridge in the Crown Security Plymouth ‘Cuda has hit the right tune at the right time getting down to some very respectable 5.8 second ET’s with plenty more in it yet!
And then there’s Frank Taylor. While a five second run has not been seen on the timeboards yet in his lane, the Chevelle seems to be on its way with Taylor recently clocking a positive 6.21 second pass.
Top Doorslammer combined with the Top Alcohol and Top Fuel Motorcycle fields makes the 48th Annual Westernationals a triple threat of heads up drag racing – throw in the ANDRA Summit Sportsman Series which has attracted teams from around the nation and you have two days of unmissable drag racing!
Sportsman Qualifying starts at midday each day with the Doorslammers on track from 5:30pm Saturday and Sunday.
