American Eliason takes first World Series win, as McFadden and Madsen set up for Saturday night thriller
The USA’s Corey Eliason broke through for his first World Series Sprintcars victory on Friday at Perth Motorplex, as the championship heated up on its penultimate night.
The crucial moment of the race came when McFadden encountered lapped traffic and got caught up, creating a passing opportunity for the Californian Eliason.
“We got fortunate that the lapped car held James up and I was close enough to take advantage of it,” Eliason said.
“I finally got the World Series Sprintcars win that has been eluding me for three years. I can’t thank Steve (Stathy, team owner) enough for the opportunity. We started off good, and what helped me on the initial start was finding the middle line on third and fourth first before anyone else did. I was praying we had the tyres that would make it.”
While Eliason had many reasons to celebrate at the AAA Metal Recycling World Series Sprintcars Grand Final, McFadden was satisfied with his performance which saw him edge a few points ahead of Madsen in the points. With just tonight’s round remaining at Perth Motorplex he is in the box seat to become champion.
“We’re happy with the night, we did what we needed to do,” McFadden said. “We weren’t great in time trials but we dug ourselves out of that hole.”
Local Sprintcar drivers endured a tough night as the touring pros reigned supreme in the feature. Ben Van Ryt was the best of the Motorplex regulars, finishing in sixth place.
The World Series Sprintcars were joined in the pits by a strong range of support divisions. Luke Weel snuck home by under three tenths of a second from Daniel Storer in the Wingless Sprints, while Mark House stretched out a lead of over four seconds from Jamie Nardini in the Formula 500s. Brandon Buszan managed to defend his WA turf from a team of invading New Zealanders in the Junior Sedans.
The final night of the AAA Metal Recycling World Series Sprintcars Grand Final takes place tonight at Perth Motorplex – don’t miss out!
