Hirst started on the outside of the front row and next to two-time Australian champion David Murcott for the 30-lap final.
It was the first WSS win of the season for Hirst and the WA-based Monte Motorsport that claimed the final – only just – from Steven Lines and Brooke Tatnell.
As the pilot of the W17 crossed the line his left rear tyre exploded just like it had done on many of his rivals’ cars but he held on for the popular win by just 0.310 of a second.
The track was abrasive on tyres in the main event with many heading infield after the track put too much pressure on the left rears.
Lines was a big mover in the main event, coming out of P15 and working his way through traffic quickly to be in a position to pounce.
Tatnell also dug deep in the W2 after suffering suspension damage in a heat race and struggling during the qualifying part of the show.
He started from P9 and worked hard for the podium finish.
Victorian Jamie Veal started from P3 and finished fourth, ahead of local drivers Shaun Bradford (from P11), Ryan Farrell (P16), Callum Williamson (P19) and Jamie Maiolo (P7).
Veal was the early leader over Murcott even in the early stages it was obvious that Lines was on a mission and was making up some serious ground, up as high as fourth within a few laps.
Williamson spun around in turn three after just a few laps, forcing a restart and putting him to the rear of the field.
Hirst was all over the back of Veal for the next few laps and looked like he was about to land a telling blow before Ian Madsen and Lee Nash came together on the fence in pits bend on lap six, putting them out of the contest.
Daniel Harding rode out wild flip in turn two on lap eight for the first red light stoppage.
Hirst went under Veal for the lead on the restart and opened up a handy advantage that he maintained through lapped traffic.
Lines by this stage had moved up to second just before Andrew Priolo belted the fence in pits bend on lap 22 for another red light stoppage.
It was a tense moment for Hirst just before this as he came up on backmarker Kye Scroop and nearly came undone but he was able to keep the car rolling and maintain his lead.
Jason Kendrick and James McFadden both went out of the contest with six remaining when their left rear tyres exploded.
Brad Maiolo, Ben Ellement and David Murcott also all ended on the infield with no rubber on their left rear rims.
Earlier in the night Dillon set Quick Time in qualifying with a 13.870-second lap, bettering that of Murcott’s 13.919 and Hirst’s 13.972.
Local driver Harding won the first heat race and did it again later on in the show with other qualifiers going the way of Troy Lawson (also twice), Andrew Priolo and Kendrick.
Lines, Farrell, Nash, Scroop, Williamson and Andrew Priolo qualified for the A Main after being the first six across the line in the incident-packed B Main that produced a bit of carnage.
Mitchell Wormall took the points for the flip of the night after getting air time before rolling back onto his wheels in spectacular fashion.
The race was declared after 13 laps when Jason Pryde flipped in pits bend.
