When your eight year old asks if you will help them build a car for Motorvation, what can you say but yes?
David Morgan has been a car enthusiast for many years and it seems it is genetic, with son Zane (8) making the request for a car he could work on himself.
The family found a VW Beetle for sale for $800 and figured it would make a good base for Zane to start work on. David said that Zane’s first request was to make it ‘fat and low’.
“The low and wide style is the theme going around, so we dropped it on its guts,” David said. “Then he wanted the exhaust removed and changed so it came out different and decided on a two tone style of point instead of just one colour.”
Zane set to work in the shed rubbing down the car ready for its new paint, which he and brother Marshall (6) decided would be black and gold.
“I’d come home from work and Zane was saying let’s go out to the shed and work on the car,” David said.
Thanks to a friend some air brushing was added to the bonnet and the family were excited when they even earned a little bit of prize money from a show.
Zane than got all entrepreneurial and decided to sink that money into some new wheels that resembled spider webs so it would match the air brushing.
“He found the wheels on Gumtree, so he sold the mags that were on the car,” David said. “He has an eye for detail. It just comes naturally.
“I’ll encourage it as far as he wants to go, I love the car scene myself. And Marshall is starting to talk about cars a bit more now.”
As for Motorvation, David said it is all about getting to spend time with other car enthusiasts.
“It’s just the atmosphere, we’re car people, my wife, myself, the family, we love it,” he said.
Maybe Zane will one day be a Grand Champion of Motorvation himself!
