JASON Kendrick claimed his first feature race of the season when he won round 3 of USA v WA Sprintcar Speedweek at the Perth Motorplex on Saturday night.
Kendrick won the 30-lap final from Brad Maiolo and Northern Territory driver Chace Karpenko that was part of the Merger Contracting Sprintcar Muster and also served as round 8 of the Maddington Toyota Sprintcar Series.
Kendrick started from P2, alongside Maiolo for main event, but struggled initially, dropping to third in the opening stages before reclaiming second on lap six and hitting the lead on lap nine.
From there he opened up a handy lead before the field came back to him on lap 21 when there was a restart.
The rest of the field didn’t have an answer and Kendrick went to win the race by 2.431 seconds.
Maiolo was the early leader but then lost the lead to Kaiden Manders who started from P4 and was in front by lap four, only to see Manders withdraw from the contest when the W60 stopped on the back straight when a restart was called after Todd Davis spun out.
After he lost the lead on lap nine Maiolo then dropped back to fourth by lap 19 before reclaiming second with about eight laps remaining.
The podium result was Maiolo’s fifth in a row – since round 4 he has claimed two wins, two seconds and a third.
The big mover was Karpenko who started from P10 in the Cowara Motorsport #41.
He muscled up to seventh in the first few laps before he hit sixth and remained there until mid-race distance before grabbing another spot.
It was on the last restart that Karpenko hit his mark, making up a couple more positions and taking a well-deserved third.
Parker Price-Miller was the only American to finish, taking fourth after starting from P6.
He was locked in a great battle with fellow American Mark Dobmeier until late in the race he tagged the back of Dobmeier, pushing him towards the fence, knocking the driveline out of the car and damaging the rear-end.
As a result Dobmeier limped to the infield and Price-Miller was relegated a couple of spots on the restart.
Jamie Maiolo, who started P7, finished fifth, ahead of Jamie Oldfield (who started P5), Taylor Milling who started 12th and again moved forward to finish eighth, Tom Payet who started 12th and finished ninth, Kye Scroop who started 11th and finished 10th and Todd Davis who started from 17th and finished 11th.
The third American in the field, Harli White, started from P14 and was involved in a few good mid-pack battles before suffering engine trouble and heading infield on lap 12.
Price-Miller claimed the Victory 1 Performance Quick Time honours with a 14.312-second lap, bettering that of Brad Maiolo’s 14.314 and Jason Kendrick’s 14.348.
Kendrick won the first heat from Oldfield and Price-Miller, with Dobmeier winning heat two from Manders and Brad Maiolo, heat three going to Priolo from Ellement and Jamie Maiolo, and the final qualifier to Oldfield from Brad Maiolo and Dobmeier.
Brad Maiolo leads the Speedweek points going into the final round that will be held at Bunbury Speedway on Tuesday, January 1.
He has 442 points to lead from Kendrick on 430, Price-Miller 428, Jamie Maiolo 420 and Kaiden Manders 406.
Olfield and Karpenko announced at the driver briefing that they would play their Joker for this round – doubling their feature race points, with the move paying off for the latter who finished third.
Each driver has until the January 12 round to play their Joker.
Brad and Jamie Maiolo are locked on 1436 points each in the Maddington Toyota Sprintcar Series and both have played their Joker.
Jason Kendrick is third on 1274 and is yet to play his Joker.
