From the first laps in qualifying right through to the two preliminary features at the end of the night the action has been awesome and paves the way for a big night as the championship unfolds this evening.
You need to be trackside to see just how good the Late Models have been and see the battle continue to be the next Australian #1.
Michael Holmes won the first preliminary feature race after stalking early leader Jay Cardy.
He used the track’s low line to perfection and showed if track conditions are similar tonight he will be one to watch.
Cardy held on for second ahead of Warren Oldfield who made amends for a tough start to the night and briefly got into second before Cardy went out the outside on the last lap and won the scrap to the finish.
Australian champion Darren Kane won the second preliminary feature in spectacular style after running side-by-side with Kye Blight in the latter stages.
They rubbed panels coming out of the last corner that got Blight’s #41 out of shape but he still managed to hold on for a podium place.
Jamie Oldfield, like Warren, had a tough start to the night, but was lurking at the business end of the show and slid through for second.
Kodee Brown was one many were talking about.
He opened up a massive lead on his rivals and was one of only two drivers (along with Craig Vosbergen) to get into the 16-second zone.
Unfortunately he pushed too hard on unlucky lap 13, tagging the pits bend fence and parking it up.
If he can replicate that pace tonight he will be very hard to beat.
There are stories right up and down pit land that could be told and will unfold with the last round of qualifying and the finals this evening. Racing will also include the Wormall Civil Sprintcars and the return of the Alltools Formula 500s.
HEAT RACE NOTEBOOK
Jay Cardy started from P2 in the first bout of the championship and after bolting to the lead he held on for the win from national champion Darren Kane who started from P4 and pole sitter Ben Nicastri.
Matt Goodlad was in trouble early and dropped to the back of the pack from his second-row start.
There was a clear gap from the front duo back to the rest of the pack.
It wasn’t a good start to the championship for Jai Mazzini and Lionel Kirkby who didn’t make it out onto the track in time, missing valuable points.
Ryan Halliday started from P2 and after he took the early lead he won from Craig Vosbergen and Kye Blight.
Blight started from P3 and was locked into an entertaining duel with Vosbergen at the start and again at the end of the battle.
Vosbergen also challenged for the lead on the last lap but washed up too high on the back straight, giving Halliday the win by 0.626 of a second.
Jamie Oldfield started from pole and was bumped by Paul Stubber on the first start attempt.
Moments later he took the lead before heading infield in the #51 machine.
Stubber won the bout from Jarrin Bielby (from P4) and Brad Blake (from P3).
The Oldfields weren’t having the best start with Warren also out of his contest after three laps.
Kodee Brown started from P2 and took the win from polesitter Jason Oldfield and Morgan Melvin (P3).
Jason Oldfield was lucky to hold on for second after tagging the pits bend fence on the lap lap.
Rob Galloway spun out late, joining four others on the infield.
Jay Cardy was an easy winner from Darren Kane, surviving a few restarts.
Cardy started at the back of the pack but drove brilliantly down the inside on the start to grab the early lead.
Kane started just in front of Cardy and while he looked threatening was not unable to make a winning move.
Michael Holmes started from P6 and looked good for third.
Jai Mazzini spun out a couple of times and after the second one officials disqualified him from the event, sending him to the infield.
Paul Joss won the sixth heat by more than two seconds after starting from pole but a lot of interest was on the battle behind him between Kye Blight, Ryan Halliday and Craig Vosbergen who finished in that order.
This was one of the best heats with some great slidejobs and moves for the minor positions.
Bryn Haythornthwaite went from the front row to the rear in the course of lap and ultimately finished eighth with Ken MacPherson trying to stay out of trouble in the latter stages by running slowly up near the fence with broken steering.
Jamie Oldfield clawed back some valuable points in this race, taking the win from Brad Blake and Jarrin Bielby.
He worked hard to get to the lead after starting from P10 and being on the back of Blake in the latter stages before taking he win by 1.094 seconds.
Blake also made up some good points after starting from P8.
Bielby started from P9 and drove well for his third after being engaged in a great battle with the cars around him, including Blake.
Chris Pavlovich started from P2 and finished fifth after looking strong early on.
Marc Giancola started from P8 and muscled his way through the pack to get the lead and ultimately the win in the final heat of the night.
He crossed the line 0.222 of a second ahead of Warren Oldfield who looked very fast after starting from P7.
Kodee Brown took third after also charging through from the rear.
Brad Ludlow switched from his #92 to father Ben’s #9 for this race but the change of car didn’t help and he parked the smoking machine at the midrace point.
