McALLAN and COONS LEVEL AFTER NIGHT 1

WESTERN Australian Dene McAllan and defending champion Jerry Coons junior from America are level on points after night one of the 67th Australian Sprintcar Championship.

They are locked on 70 points each after the first 12 heats.
New South Welshman Mark Brown, who won the Magic Man 34 at the same venue two weeks earlier is next on the list with WA’s Scott Glazebrook both on 66 points.

Matt Young is fifth with 65, followed by Todd Wanless on 61, Nathan Smee 58, Ken Stanaway 56, Kelvin Hamilton 52 and Steven Henderson on 49 to round out the top 10.

It was a tough opening night for some of the competitors.

Neville Lance, described as one of the most unluckiest drivers, to have never won a title, was again cursed.

His main machine had the back end ripped out of it after he was hit from behind as he slowed up while leading his opening heat.

His back-up car then had mechanical problems continuing his woes.

Former national speedcar and sprintcar champion Robbie Farr was driving the Graham family owned #14 but ended his night early with mechanical woes.

New Zealand Michael Pickens who finished second to Steven Graham in the same event here at the Motorplex in 2005 struggled and never finished a heat, effectively ending his challenge.

McAllan, after jumping too early on the first start, led the field away the second time for an easy win in the first heat.

Hamilton slid into second late in the race while Brown took third after a spirited battle with Farr and Waddell.

Coons waited until half way through the second heat to show his hand, winning from Wanless and Glazebrook.

The veteran Watson showed he still had something for the younger drivers with some desperate slide jobs on Wanless for the lead early on.

The American watched the action in front of him for a few laps before sliding into the action in what was another great three-car battle.

Watson was looking strong for the third until he ran out of power on the last lap, seeing the back-starting Glazebrook the major benefactor.

Lance’s chances of trying to win a title took a dive early after he ran out of power on the last lap of the third heat.

He was leading the field into the final corner of the 10-lap heat when he slowed up and was collected by a couple of cars, heavily damaging the rear end of the #14 machine.

Prior to that led early in the heat from Smee and Stanaway. The field bunched up three laps from home for a restart after Robinson pulled up on the main straight.

The race was declared on the last lap when Lance slowed up dramatically in pits bend and was collected by a couple of slow-moving vehicles.

Smee won the race from Stanaway and Palmer in an all interstate affair.

There were mixed results in the fourth heat with American Ray winning while New Zealander Pickens, who finished second here in the 2005 title, pulled infield early.

Smith led early but was soon swamped by Wanless and Waddell trading places on many occasions.

Wanless finally got the nod from Waddell with Hamilton third.

Glazebrook won heat six and survived a big slide job from Coons on the last corner while Stanaway was third.

Heat seven saw only three cars finish in a small five-car field with Lance and Ray both pulling up in the latter stages.

Pickens and Farr were both out early in the seventh heat won by Young from Henderson and Tammy Telenta.

Brown won heat eight from McAllan and Harders.

McAllan then kept himself on top of the points table after a very easy win in heat nine.

Ironically Young and Wanless who were equal with McAllan and Coons on points going into the third round were second and third.

In heat 10 Waddell, who was 11th in the points at that stage, went too hard in pits bend and spun the car around on the second lap, forcing a restart.

He was on a charge two laps in when he ran high in pits bend, clouted the concrete and rolled about six times.

Waddell escaped injury but was disappointed with the result when interviewed on the infield moments later.

Coons kept himself at the top of the table as well with a half a lap win in the drawn out heat.

At the end of the race Keith Giles got out of sorts coming onto the main straight and put the silver #76 machine in the fence hard and flipping.

Glazebrook won the 11th heat from Peterman and Harders while Brown won the final heat of the night from Smee and Hamilton.

American Speedcar sensation Jerry Coons has returned to Australia to defend his title with no less than three other US drivers - Iowa standout Davey Ray, Mat Neely from Illanois and from the state that is synonymous with motor racing - Indiana comes Anthony Peterman joining him.
Three teams, Michaels Pickens, Shaun Insley and Stevie Walsh have wandered across the ditch from the land of the long white cloud to participate in the Championship.
There are no less than 10 Interstate teams joining in the fun and games this Friday and Saturday including Australia number 2 Mark Brown pictured above after winning the inaugural Magic Man 34, Nathan Smee, Matt Smith, Rocket Industries Matt Young and Robbie Farr, who will be doing double duties in his Speedcar and Sprintcar all from New South Wales.

The banana benders are well represented with Todd Wanless, Ken Stanaway, Kelvin Hamilton, Jeremy Hassell, Brendan Palmer and Michael Harders along with sole Victorian entry, Harley Bishop making for a total of 19 visiting teams for the weekend.

Facing them will be a strong West Australian contingent including Scotty Galzebrook, Todd Waddell, Neville Lance and Tom Watson senior.

Throw in some wild card entries that could upset a few of the big names including Keith Giles, Rick Geneve, Jimmy Fleming and former West Coast Eagles full forward Troy Wilson making his Speedcar debut and you have the making of a great two nights of Australian Championship Speedway here at the Perth Motorplex.

The support program on Friday night includes 360 Sprintcars, Super Sedans and Formula 500's.

On Saturday night the Speedcars will be supported with the Watson Express Sprintcars (including eastern racers Daniel Reidy, Robbie Farr (doing double duties in both Speedcars and Sprintcars) Bryan Mann along with US driver Chad Blonde driving for the Kendrick 92.9 team.
