The drink of choice at the 37th annual Chill Westernationals was milk flavored - that was until the Brett Stevens Racing duo of Brett Stevens in Top Doorslammer and Troy McClean in Top Bike made it a Jack Daniels weekend!
And the Top Doorslammer championship has been kept alive after Ben Bray defeated series leader John Zappia in the semi finals to keep several racers in the mathematical chance of winning the series including Stevens and Sydneys Steve Stanic.
Event report by Simon Cope:

Top Doorslammer Eliminations Round 1
Peter Kapiris and Robin Judd are out first this afternoon in round 1 of eliminations for Top Doorslammer. Both these teams have found some performance and consistency of late and they will be aiming to capitalise on that tonight. Kapiris out on a holeshot and he’s in the lead all the way and takes the win light with a solid 6.10 to Judd’s 6.23.

Maurice Fabietti and Ben Bray pair up next, Fabietti with a huge burnout to half track but that will be a long backup for him. Both cars go into stage and it’s a hard to tell who’s out first but Benny quickly pulls ahead and powers for the win with a 6.02 to Fabietti’s 6.34.

Third pairing will be Gary Phillips up against Brett Stevens, will Brett be able to backup last nights performances in these afternoon conditions and what does Phillips have under the bonnet, it looks looks good from the green and it’s Brett nosing ahead by 330’ and he will go through to the next round with a 6.01 to Phillips 6.08, the margin being only 3m at the finish line.

Last out will be John Zappia up against arch nemesis Victor Bray, Zappia with the Whipple combo on board for raceday after hurting the PSI combo in the last-ditch qualifying run last night, Bray red lights though and goes straight into shake, that 7.22 no match in any case for Zappia’s 6.21 peddling effort in the other lane.
Top Doorslammer Semi-Finals

Top Doorslammer Semi Finals
Semi finals opens with John Zappia facing off against Ben Bray. Bray just off a 6.02 in the opening round, Zappia struggling a little with the Whipple back in the car so this should get interesting. Zappia is eager to race and waits for Benny to get into pre-stage, both cars in now and a dead heat to 60’ before the Monaro starts drifting toward the wall, he has to peddle as he gets over close to the wall while Ben heads straight down the left lane for a 6.09 and the win.

On the other side of the ladder Peter Kapiris is up against Brett Stevens, Kapiris would love to take out another event here, both leave hard but Kapiris rattles the tires and has to peddle, gets back on the noise and there’s a big pop from the car about 330’ out and he rolls through for a 7.85, Brett in the other lane takes a conservative 6.07 win.

Top Doorslammer Finals
Ben Bray and Brett Stevens face off to be the Top Doorslammer winner. Both these guys desperately want the points on offer to close the Championship gap so this is a tough one to call. A good start for both cars and it looks like Ben first to 330’ when the car starts to move around and he has to abort for a 9.38, no match for Steven’s 6.10.

Top Bike Eliminations Round 1
Athol Williams out first in Top Bike, it looks like he has a solo when Neville Smith can’t fire the Harley. Will Athol push it hard to get lane choice in round 2, the bike seems soft off the line and it’s rough going to half track when he shuts it off and rolls through for an 8.80.

Jay Upton second out facing up with Troy Mclean, Jay will need to wring the bike out here as Mclean is in super form this event, Upton out first with a 0.1 advantage on the line but Troy just squeaks around to take the win with a 6.83 to Upton’s ragged 6.92.
Ian Ashelford and Mark Drew take a shot in the third pair, both these teams running some good numbers yesterday so this should be another great race. Ashelford out first but hits shake about 150’ out and has to get off it, Drew powers through for a 6.84 win over Ashelford’s 8.70.

Mark Ashelford and Brett Stevens round out the Top Bike field, Mark gets a slight holeshot on Stevens and maintains it all the way to the finish line for a 6.83 win over Steven’s 6.95.

Top Bike Semi Finals
Mark Ashelford and Athol Williams open the semi-finals for Top Bike, both these guys have been running well all weekend. Ashelford into stage first, both out clean on the green and it’s a close race to the finish line, a 6.90 for Ashelford but Athol takes the win with a 6.70 to advance to the finals.
Mark Drew and Troy Mclean form the other pairing, Drew has been impressive on the Harley and Mclean is super consistent on his machine. Drew’s bike carries the front wheel to the 330’ mark but slowly drifts over and takes out the blocks from 1000’ on giving Mclean the win with a consistent 6.72.

Top Bike Final
Finals for Top Bike consist of Troy Mclean and Athol Williams. The teams have put on a great show this weekend with the consistency of the bikes. Both bikes out hard on the green and its flames all the way down track with a 6.70 win for Mclean to Athol’s 6.74.
