| IN the lead up to this event last year Sydneysider and World of Outlaws
star Kerry Madsen had never seen the Perth Motorplex. But that didn’t stop the former national sprintcar champion from putting on a clinic and showing everyone the quick line around the Kwinana Beach venue as he won the annual Michael Nanovich Sprintcar King of Wings. He made everyone stand up and take notice as he powered the orange #29 machine owned by Jeff Leisk and spannered by Kim Buswell to wins in the preliminary feature on the Friday night and then again in the main event on Saturday night. The good news is this same combination is back again for the 26th running of the prestigious event this Friday and Saturday nights. If you saw Madsen in action this time last year you will know how good he was and will be back to watch him take on the rest of the pack again. If you didn’t and are wondering what all the fuss is about, then you need to make sure you ARE here. But the challenge for the Mad Man to go back-to-back is huge – nearly as high as the $15,000 to win on Saturday night. National champion Brooke Tatnell will contest this time-honoured event for the first time since Claremont Speedway closed. He will be buckled into the Australia #1 machine owned and professionally presented by Krikke Motorsports. This winning combination will be hard to beat if they get on their game and have a point to prove after a dismal result in Bunbury last weekend. Another New South Welshman worth keeping an eye on is former national sprintcar and speedcar champion Robbie Farr. He started from 25th in the feature race at the Motorplex two weeks ago and powered the #7 machine to a second place in a high-speed sprintcar final. Then last weekend he won the cash in the Krikke Memorial in Bunbury proving he is in red-hot form on his WA swing. You just know Farr and crew chief Nick Speed won’t take long to get a handle on the local track conditions and this new partnership (which finished second in Wanless World Series Sprintcars) means business. But wait there’s more….in fact much more. American Kaley Gharst will be driving in a very powerful two-car team that also features WA’s Ryan Farrell. The pair of #95 machines can both be expected to be at the pointy end of the field at the business end of each night. Ghast is a young driver in a hurry and tipped to be one of the next big things in America. And as for Farrell – well his record speaks for itself and he is the master of the high line at the Motorplex – something fans will be hoping to see this week. Also keep an eye on Farrell’s new paint scheme which has had green introduced and looks very effective. The second American in the field is Chad Blonde who recently teamed up with Perth’s Kendrick Racing for the remainder of the WA season. Blonde is also one of the stars of the future and after some promising results in the #92 entry will be looking to strike in this headline show. There’s no shortage of firepower in the other visiting teams. Victorian David Murcott will be driving the Garry Rush #2N while South Australian Trevor Green has put a winning Maxwill Motors machine into the Greg Fisher owned #15. Queensland is well represented by Bryan Mann, Allan Woods, Dan Morton and Danny Reidy. Mann took advantage of a good start in the feature race here two weeks ago for a podium finish while the ultra-professional Dan Morton is expected to do well in the black #78Q. This will be Woods’ first time at the Motorplex and hopefully he likes what he sees. As for Reidy, the Rock Star of the sprintcar set will be looking to continue some of the car speed he has shown in recent weeks. He is also fired up after a steward’s decision went against him in Bunbury last week. South Australian pair Steven Lines and Glen Sutherland got the jump on most of the field when they attended a practice session at the Motorplex on Wednesday night. Expect to see Lines up the list when it comes to time trials – he is very quick and we think he will like the wide open spaces of the Motorplex. Will the winner come from one of the drivers mentioned above or will a hometown hero show everyone the quickest this sprintcar nirvana? You know the deal – YOU'LL BE HERE! |
