MONTE WINS SPRINTCAR SILVER CUP

LUCH Monte had more reason to smile at the end of the feature race at the Perth Motorplex last night when he won the DiCandilo Steel City Sprintcar Silver Cup over 25 laps. Monte started from pole position and led all the way for the win from Ken Sartori and Shaun Bradford. It was a much better result for Monte who at the last meeting in Perth was second but ultimately disqualified when his #17 machine came in underweight. Monte was the big leader while Sartori raced from 10th fourth within two laps and was looking for an inside move on Jodi Waldron. The only restart on the race was when Scott Milling clouted the concrete on the main straight after two laps. On the restart Monte bolted and enjoyed a big gap over the now second-placed Sartori who also had a big buffer back to Rick Geneve, Ben Ellement, Darryl Clayden and Shaun Bradford. With 14 laps to go Carl Dowling got out of control on the approach to the main straight which gave Monte a tense moment as he went to lap the #87 machine. Ben Ellement, who earlier in the night set quick time, slowed up while being fourth with six laps to go. Kalgoorlie driver Kanne Manuel won the 360 sprint car feature race after only just making it out for the feature race and started from the rear. Daniel Hawkins was the early leader over Jason Boland while there was a good battle for third between Darren Mewett and Manuel who ultimately moved to second within six laps. Dean Kappler’s motor let off a big smoke screen which made visibility difficult and officials put on the caution lights. On the restart Hawkins led the pack away but on the back straight he suffered steering failure and slammed into the safety fence hard.
