Perth Motorplex Update: August 2016
Welcome to the second edition of the Perth Motorplex newsletter with VenuesWest in the ‘drivers’ seat.
The Perth Motorplex Advisory Committee, who meet fortnightly has been formed to advise and support the transition of the venue to VenuesWest.
Sanctioning – Drag Racing
VenuesWest issued a Request for Proposal (RFP) on 1 August to both the International Hot Rod Association (IHRA) and the Australian National Drag Racing Association (ANDRA).
The proposals must be submitted by 18 August for the Drag Racing Sanctioning Body. As part of this process each sanctioning service provider must adhere to a pre-qualification requirement.
Under this requirement they must be assessed and deemed a suitable sanctioning body under the Sanctioning Body Assessment Tool (SBAT), which was created by VenuesWest in 2015 to assess the suitability of sanctioning bodies for drag racing events at Perth Motorplex.
With the SBAT process complete both service providers have been found compliant and therefore deemed suitable.
I can assure you that regardless of the outcome, the safety of racers and the general public remains the number one priority for VenuesWest and the State Government.
Recruitment of General Manager role
VenuesWest is delighted to announce the appointment of Shane Walsh, currently VenuesWest Event Manager, to the new role of General Manager for Perth Motorplex.
After a comprehensive recruitment process where we received interest from across Australia and internationally, I am delighted to announce that one of Western Australia’s most experienced venue and event managers has been appointed to take on the role of General Manager of Perth Motorplex for VenuesWest.
With a career that spans three decades managing and operating venues and events, Shane is also an accredited venue manager from the Venue Management Association. Shane not only brings with him extensive knowledge of VenuesWest, but also a wealth of national experience managing events and venues.
Shane will transition into his new role shortly and will be responsible for the general operations of the venue and events as well as stakeholder and staff management.
We have been fortunate enough to keep Gavin Migro as our Speedway Racing Manager and Rod Britton as Drag Racing Manager, and the combination of their Motorplex experience with Shane’s venues and event experience will be great for both competitors and spectators at the venue.
On behalf of VenuesWest we are excited to welcome Shane to this new role and look forward to seeing what the future holds. I would also like to thank Kevin Prendergast for his many years of service to drag racing generally and the Perth Motorplex specifically. I would also like to thank him for agreeing to stay until we have had a chance to do a handover with Shane Walsh.
Since 1 July, as interim operator of the venue we have received many comments, questions, concerns and a lot of positive feedback about the venue. We want you to know that we have listened to your feedback and we have made some changes that we believe you will be very happy with.
I encourage you to keep reading to see what changes are set to be implemented for the coming season. If you would like to provide feedback on anything that is discussed please respond through our feedback survey or do not hesitate to contact us.

With so many exciting events planned for the Speedway at Perth Motorplex this season, the summer of 2016/17 is definitely not one to be missed.
A perfect example of what is on offer is the Christmas / New Year and January period which will take on a Stars and Stripes American theme on the high-banks of the Speedway.
After several seasons in recess the USA v WA Sprintcar Speedweek returns to the Speedway landscape, with 2 rounds each at Bunbury Speedway and Perth Motorplex.
1. 26th December Bunbury Speedway
2. 27th December Perth Motorplex
3. 30th December Bunbury Speedway
4. 1st January Perth Motorplex – Watsons Express Transport USA v WA
Thanks to Perth Motorplex sponsor Wormall Civil, American sensation ‘Black Jack’ Brian Brown from Grain Valley Missouri will lead the stars and stripes team in the four rounds series.
Backing up Black Jack will be Fresno California based star of the future Dominic Scelzi. The eighteen year old ‘California Kid’ Scelzi comes with an unbelievable racing pedigree as his father is none other than American Drag Racing Legend Gary Scelzi
The stars and stripes theme will roll into a January 13/14 double header with Di Candilo Steel City Late Model Nationals. Thanks to Michael Holmes this blue ribbon Late Model event has attracted one of America’s best drivers in ‘The Kentucky Colonel’ Steve Francis from Ashland Kentucky. In addition to Francis, Middleburg Florida’s Jason Fitzgerald is making his first tour down-under in the Halliday family 99. Early reports suggest that some of the eastern states best drivers will be heading west to take on our local heroes.
For the first time in many years the WA Late Model Championship returns to the home of WA Speedway Perth Motorplex on 28th January. This night of Super Speedway action promises to be huge with The Great Caravan Boat and Dunny Demo Derby rounding out one of the fans favourite events of the summer. It’s expected that The American’s and eastern invaders will remain in the west for the right to be WA number one.
Revheads – your wait is nearly over! Those cold winter months are coming to an end, its time to crank over that bike – lube up that car, and find out once and for all the important question: “Is my car faster than my mates?”
WhoopAss Wednesday returns in September for the first of 38 nights throughout the summer season.
Plus, the opportunity to light up those rear-tyres with fan-favourite burnouts smashing the loud pedal around 9pm.
The theme nights provide opportunities to entice the newbies or wannabe’s that have been sitting on the sidelines contemplating getting that car or bike out – to finally get down the strip – at the special discounted price of $20.
At every WhoopAss Wednesday, whilst we have theme nights for some cars or bikes, there is still plenty of time for everyone else to get numerous runs down the drag strip.
Theme nights which have been newly added for 2016/17 include Ford night, Mitsubishi v Mazda, Honda vs Nissan, and the one we have had requested a hundred or so times: Commodore night.
Keep an eye out on the motorplex website in coming weeks for full details on WhoopAss Wednesday.
