WA speedway fans remember Claremont Speedway fondly and Perth Motorplex will pay tribute to the venue that started it all this Saturday.
With the Sprintcar Silver Cup and the WA Late Model Championship taking place there will be plenty of action on track, but the pits will also be alive with classic speedway vehicles on display.
As time goes on, there are an increasing number of racers whose only speedway memories are at the Motorplex, but drivers such as Sprintcar racer Andrew Priolo remember getting to the famous western suburbs venue for its famous Friday night events.
“As a kid I actually grew up very close friends with Brad Maiolo,” he said. “We would do our school homework on a Friday afternoon as we left school early most Fridays – or I would get Brad to do mine!
“We would then race around two trees pretending we were Sprintcars, using old (visor) tear offs that we had picked up. Now it is quite cool we get to race each other.
“This weekend we need to be solid from start to finish. My goal for the season was to win races and time is running out with only two races to go so hopefully I bring my A-game and go for the win.”
The Maddington Toyota Sprintcar Series, Sims Metal Management Late Models, Telf Promotional Products Formula 500s, Wingless Sprints and Pool Shop Group Speedcars will feature during the night, with some even sporting retro liveries for the event.
Heats begin from 5pm Saturday with the main show from 6pm.
