A new name will be entering the Top Bike ranks at Perth Motorplex this Sunday at Jet Car Max when Ben Stevens begins licensing on his nitro Harley.
Stevens is no stranger to the drag racing game as the son of Gary Stevens who competed in Top Doorslammer for several years and as the nephew of Kim Stevens, who rode and owned the motorcycle previously (pictured above).
Stevens was an avid stunt rider, doing shows on quads, until an accident last year that brought a change in the sports he could consider.
“I had an accident last year where I was training for a (stunt) show at the Motorplex and missed my landing, breaking both ankles, both legs, both wrists and sternum,” he said. “I went through six months of rehab and then the doctors, after much discussion, decided to amputate my right leg below knee. This was on the sixth of May, so the year has certainly been an interesting one to say the least.”
As something of an adrenaline junkie, Stevens knew that stunt riding would be off the agenda and so he was looking for something that was achievable, but still a massive rush.
“I think it’s safe to say I won’t be able to hang off the back of my bike anymore after my accident and the next craziest thing that had come to mind was nitro bikes,” he said. “I have always wanted to hop on one and see what it’s like, stemming from back in 2003 watching Brett Stevens on his bike at the time.
“Uncle Kim went well on this bike and I certainly have big shoes to fill riding the machine in anyway like he did.”
Stevens believes when he gets to the track again for his licensing, that adrenaline he seeks will be back in force.
“Standing in the staging lanes again I think it’s fair to say there will be a lot running through my mind, but nevertheless I think it will be clouded out by excitement,” he said.
Fortunately Stevens does have prior experience in fast vehicles, having been able to driver his dad’s Holden Monaro Top Doorslammer a few years ago.
“It will definitely have a big impact on the situation,” he said. “At least I have an idea on what I’m up for with acceleration and speed. That would be about it though. Prior to hopping into the Doorslammer back in 2008 the fastest car I had driven was my V6 Hilux!”
Stevens will be joined in the Top Bike exhibition this Sunday by Australian champions Mark Drew and Ian Ashelford, plus Danny Makin, all riding 300kmh+ nitro Harleys!
