Dozens of teams have taken the opportunity to get an early look at Perth Motorplex ahead of the MacTrack Westernationals which take place this Saturday and Sunday, March 3 and 4.
Pre-event testing began on Wednesday where several racers unfortunately saw a tough start to their weeks as mechanical carnage took hold.
Mark Chapman munched up a tailshaft in his Pro Slammer Plymouth Fury, causing damage in the rear end and spiking the motor to 10,500RPM. The team were not sure if they would be ready for the weekend.
Marty Dack had motor troubles in his beautiful Ford Mustang Pro Slammer, continuing a frustrating season for the team.
Wayne McGuinness had his first ride on the ex-Damian Muscat Nitro Harley but it did not end well when a tyre smoking run saw the engine kick a rod out near the startline.
There was better news for a number of other racers including Ryan Learmonth, who had a new motor in his Pro Stock Motorcycle and ran a 7.48 on his second lap in the heat of the day, while Jon Ferguson’s Supercharged Outlaws Chev is responding well to a new rear end with some straight seven second runs.
Two new faces were licensing in Modified dragsters, with Jayde Robinson and Melissa Le-Cocq both making plenty of laps.
Fast forward to Thursday and it was time for more of the Pro Slammers to hit the track. Paul Mouhayet was the leader of the pack with a strong 5.73 run after tuning around tyre shake issues for the Moits Racing Ford Mustang.
Local hero John Zappia put a 5.74 on the scoreboards but it came after running down several timing boxes, so Zappia will need to work on keeping the Fuchs/Dananni Hotshots Monaro on the straight and narrow across the weekend.
400 Thunder Pro Slammer champion Mark Belleri was back in form with a 5.81, while Sam Fenech set a new personal best time of 5.82 seconds in the App Shop Camaro.
Ben Bray got his Gulf Western Oil Corvette down to a 5.84, with team mate Frankie Taylor (all the way from the USA) carded an early shut off 5.9 second run.
So what do all these numbers and names mean? Simply put, the MacTrack Westernationals is an event not to be missed!
400 Thunder Professional Drag Racing Series action begins from 5.30pm on Saturday and Sunday, with the Summit Sportsman Series on track from 12pm each day.
