Warren Oldfield took advantage of his favourite track conditions to win the Late Model division at the Bonza Bradford 57 event recently at Perth Motorplex, and he now has his eye on the Scardifields Smash Repairs King of Wings this Saturday.
Oldfield’s strong season start was a combination of a well-suited Motorplex surface and plenty of off-season work.
“The track was slick which I like,” he said. “We nailed the set-up for the conditions and searched around the track, and found a line that was good.
“Over the off season we upgraded our suspension package and got the latest stuff that was available. The shocks and springs have changed a great deal recently and have made the cars a lot more stable.”
There’s a lot to like right now about Late Models in Western Australia. Strong car counts and a field of talented drivers have made for one of the most unpredictable categories in the sport,
“Late Models would have to be the most competitive class of speedway in WA,” Oldfield said. “Last season we had 10 different winners and it doesn’t matter if you spend $30,000 or upwards of $100,000 – if you get your car set up right on the night you are in with a chance.”
Oldfield feels the racing in the Late Models has become a lot cleaner in recent years, with less carnage in the class despite the big size of the cars.
“The Late Models have a lot less damage than five to ten years ago,” he said. “They are a little more forgiving than an open wheel car but from inside the car things can happen pretty fast. You aren’t able to see a car until it is almost level with you.”
As the Scardifields Smash Repairs King of Wings looms, Oldfield is not getting too keen on his chances – he knows that the Late Models are anyone’s game right now.
“Things will need to fall my way to win the King of Wings night,” he said. “There is a lot of fast cars and great competitors in late models.”
The Scardifields Smash Repairs King of Wings features not just the Late Models but also 410ci and 360ci Sprintcars, Limited Sprintcars and Formula 500s, plus the first Carbusters Demolition Derby for the season with $5,000 prize money up for grabs.
Gates open at 4.30pm with heats from 5pm and the main show from 6pm.
