Burnout veteran Shane Dubberlin is getting antsy for another big skid in VANTSY at Kwinana Performance Burnout Blitz on Saturday, November 28 at Perth Motorplex.
With 20 years of burnout competition under his bet, Dubberlin is one of the most experienced drivers on the scene.
“It’s a completely different world to how it started. In 1995 if you made 300 or 400 horsepower you were right up there, but now if you’re not making 1000 you’re not in the show,” he said.
Dubberlin has always skidded Holdens, starting with a HQ one tonner he originally built for drag racing.
“Back in 95 that was making 500 horsepower and it was mainly set up as a drag car – it all went from there,” he said.
But VANTSY is something different and certainly stands out with its provocative airbrushing and classic panel van looks.
“There was nothing going around that was real different, and I wanted something different. I bought it half built, with no engine or gearbox and then built a nice little 360 small block Chev for it and now it makes about 1000 horsepower.”
With the competition stepping up so much for burnout comps around the country, Dubberlin explained how he has been tempted to swing the engine to ever higher RPMs, but that strategy will likely be in for a change for this Saturday night.
“Hopefully the car stays in one piece, I have had a few engine dramas and broke a few bits and pieces, so we will keep the RPM down and keep it together.
“We went to Bindoon and we were swinging it to nearly 9000 and broke a heap of pushrods – it’s go hard or go home.
“At Kwinana Performance Burnout Blitz we will swing it to 7500-7600rpm. It’s normally pretty reliable, just lately we have been getting a bit excited with it.”
Dubberline is looking forward to returning to the Perth Motorplex Snake Pit, which he said is one of the great burnout pads, and the adrenaline rush of performing in front of thousands of people.
“It’s nice and long so you can get some speed up on entry, you’ve got a few places you can use as a viewpoint for where you may be on the pad, it is one of the best in Australia.
“(Doing a burnout) is incredible, your heart start pumping and you lose track of everything except what is going on in the car. It is the best high.”
Kwinana Performance Burnout Blitz sees first skids from 6pm this Saturday night at Perth Motorplex.
