Strangely, Zappia’s wins have come in three different categories including a Blown Alcohol exhibition at the season opener, the first round of the WA Summer Slam Series and now Top Comp.
While the final round was something of an anticlimax as Russell Ladbrook was unable to make it to the start line for the decider, the event showed Zappia would be in top form come the second event of the WA Summer Slam next month.
Wayne Patterson took the trophy home for Competition Bike, as his turbocharged Ducati clocked an 8.33sec. time, underneath the national record for the DD/Comp Bike class. Patterson defeated Ryan Learmonth, who earlier in the day avoided near disaster when a vacuum pump motor failed, almost catching his motorcycle on fire.
Norbert Claite picked up his first win in Supercharged Outlaws, driving his unique Jaguar to a 7.07sec. win.
A format change ahead of the event saw many of the sportsman classes use a different format to avoid the worst of the 40 degree heat on the day. Enjoying the modified racing style in Top Sportsman was Paul Downe, who claimed three out of three racing round wins and then scored big in the final with a stunning 8.036sec. pass on his 8.03 handicap to defeat Alby Bakranich.
George Kelly went toe-to-toe with Kevin Boulton all night in Outlaw Radial and came home with the event honours, while Cory Treasure had a near perfect night in Modified, defeating Nicholas Wroe in the final.
Kathy Regan made a move in the overall Super Sedan championship series, using a perfect .000 reaction time to knock out Mick Fenton in the final. Rob Good picked up his very first National Open win in Modified Bike defeating former national champion Ian Read.
The top two drivers in the Super Street points did battle in the final, with Richard Stevens’ win against Craig Caton seeing him take over the championship lead. In Junior Dragster Final Brock Moresby took the big trophy over Zara Board in the A/JD match up.
The next round of the WA Drag Racing Championships takes place on January 4, alongside the Aeroflow Outlaw Nitro Funny Car Series.
